Cake stands should provide a pretty background that should draw attention to the food but not distract from it (stands with simplistic edges are perfect). I like unusually-colored plates that compliment chocolate or vanilla cakes. The shorter the vertical lip the better, since they show more of the cake on top.

Inspired by my last roundup of Rustic and Textured Food Photography Props, I created a more tailored one just for cupcakes! Cupcakes are tough to photograph. Some are better to photograph as a group; others need to shine in their own single spotlight. I gravitate towards perky plates and backgrounds for cupcakes (they’re just a fun food!) but a teeny-tiny simple white plate or saucer is what I use most often for cupcakes.
